Practice Dentistry in Australia
WHAT IS AUSTRALIAN DENTAL COUNCIL (ADC)?
The ADC is the independent accreditation authority for the dental professions in Australia. The ADC is appointed by the DBA under the NRAS to conduct assessments and examinations of overseas qualified dental professionals who are seeking eligibility to apply for registration with the DBA.
The ADC assessment process
Overseas qualified dental practitioners wanting to register to practise with the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) who are required to complete the Australian Dental Council (ADC) assessment, must complete the three-stage assessment process.
The ADC assessment process is a three-stage process
- INITIAL ASSESSMENT
- WRITTEN EXAMINATION
- PRACTICAL EXAMINATION
STEP 1
Initial assessment for dental practitioners
The initial assessment is the first stage of the dental practitioner assessment process. At this stage ADC review your documents to ensure you are eligible to complete the process.
In this assessment , the candidates who are interested for practice in Australia has to complete his/her documentation and post or upload to concern authority as per requirements of ADC.
You can complete an Initial assessment of profession qualification application form at any time. After your application is assessed you will be given a candidate reference number. You must provide this number when contacting the ADC about your application.
Timeframe: Approximately 8 weeks
Cost: $610 AUD
Validity: 7 years (once after file accepted by ADC)
ELIGIBILITY
The eligibility to apply for an initial assessment.
• a four-year, full time university dental degree, or diploma, from a recognised university; and
• held registration or licence in either your home country, or country of training, with no withdrawal of registration.
DOCUMENTATION
You must submit these documents with your application:
• Current passport (high quality colour copy)
• Passport photo
• Evidence of change of name (if required)
• Dental qualification, official certificate, or testamur
• Academic transcript
• Evidence of registration or licence to practise dentistry.
STEP 2
Dentist written examination
The written examination is the second stage of the dental practitioner assessment process
Validity: 3 years
Timeframe: Approximately five months
Cost: AUD $2,000
STEP 3
Dentist practical examination
The practical examination is the third and final stage of the ADC assessment process.
Timeframe: Approximately six to nine months
Cost: AUD $4,500
EXAMINATION CENTER FOR STEP 3 WILL BE IN AUSTRALIA ONLY.
The examination is held over two days; a technical skills day and a clinical skills day. Examinations are held most weeks of the year at the ADC examination centre.
Upon successful completion of the practical examination, candidates are eligible to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia (DBA).
